Sara Hughes could fairly be called one of New Zealand's best-known contemporary artists. Using brightly-coloured commercial sign-writers' vinyl, she applies vibrant and intricate computer-cut patterns directly to the walls and floors of buildings, disrupting their normal functions, exploring their spaces and surfaces, and teasing our perceptions. Her fascination with the history of design has led her to a study of the paisley pattern and an exploration of the optical effects of digital imagery. Many of her installations have the dazzling impact of op-art, often on a huge scale.

Sara Hughes lives and works in Auckland. She exhibits frequently in New Zealand and overseas and, in 2003, was awarded a Frances Hodgkins Fellowship from the University of Otago.
