A SUMMER OF CRICKET An exhibition of art, stamps and stories 22 October 2005 – 12 February 2006 Curated by Elizabeth Gertsakis This exhibition captures the spirit of the game of cricket as it has been played and watched by generations of Australians over their summer holidays. The memory and anticipation of warm and relaxed days listening to Test cricket commentary on the radio evokes a nostalgia for simpler more innocent times. Similarly, in the realm of collecting, be it cricket memorabilia, cricket cards or cricket stamps, the individual collector savours, reflects and takes pleasure in the search and ordering of small graphic items which in their forms and colours evoke the impressions and fascinations of youth. A Summer of Cricket is a comprehensive display of art and design from the National Philatelic Collection illustrating the sport of cricket on Australian stamps. It includes cricket stamps of the world from Australia Post’s Universal Postal Union collection and rare philatelic cricket items loaned by specialist cricket collector, Mr Noel Almeida. For the newcomer seeking some context in order to understand the passion for the game, the Picture Collection of the State Library of Victoria, loaned images of nineteenth-century cricket engravings and twentieth-century photographs showing the role of cricket in the lives of Australians over the last 150 years. These capture subjects from batting and bowling on the beaches of Gallipoli to beach cricket at Sorrento. The exhibition also takes a look at the quirky vocabulary of cricket and the rules of the game. All you need to do is don the whites, inspect the wicket and hope you win the toss! _____________________________________________ Photo: Boy wearing knee length pants (c. 1900) La Trobe Picture Collection, State Library of Victoria _____________________________________________ Post Master Gallery 321 Exhibition Street (enter from La Trobe St) Melbourne Vic 3000 Bookings: John Link, (03) 9204 7727 Email: john.link@auspost.com.au
