Lee Shelden’s pencil drawings are very gentle and delicate in style and yet many of them are quite large works. She writes: ’’These drawings are primarily about intimacy, focusing on small, simple everyday things. There is drama and mystery in the way the light changes the turned up corner of a piece of silk, or warmth remains in a tattered moth’s wing’. Lee is interested in the spatial qualities of Morandi and Goya, the colour and light of Velasquez and Bonnard and the elegant line in early Japanese woodblock prints. She captures elements of all these masters in her sewing room series as well as conveying her need and appreciation of quiet spaces.
