LIZ CAFFIN: A series of etchings set in Greece and Venice, Italy.
Liz Caffin's technical skill and whimsical humour combine to produce fragments of memories or imaginings of our European heritage. Her Greek works are inspired by, and recall Ancient Greek mythology; the chaos of modern Athens with its mix of motorbikes and ruins; and the gentle and pleasant life on the Greek Island, Zante. Occasionally the echidna appears as a reminder of the artist’s home territory in the bushland of Central Victoria. It visits Venetian and Greek sites to suggest our European past. As a visitor, the echidna is in a strange yet historically familiar setting. Just as the artist is a product of both European and Australian cultures, the echidna is at home in both contexts.
