Rain on the Hill

After the recent wonderful rain, how quickly the landscape comes to life. Creeks flow again, and trees, pastures and rolling hills display a palette of lush, vibrant greens. Views along the Calder and Midland Highways and throughout much of Central Victoria are quite diverse, ranging from forests, to bushland, to farmlands. It is always exciting when an artist’s interpretation of such familiar subjects makes us see their beauty anew.

Following her highly successful exhibition in 2004, printmaker Carolyn Graham is exhibiting her recent landscapes at Falkner Gallery. Her “Wind on the Hill” exhibition resulted in almost all linocuts and woodcuts being sold, thus many have eagerly awaited her new works.

Her new Show, simply titled “Trees, Hill and Sky” consists of 20 linocuts and woodcuts in very small editions. Rolling hills, ploughed fields and planted windbreaks are sometimes tousled by wind or flooded in evening or early morning light. Occasionally, dramatic formations of storm clouds hover above the rich green land enhancing its vibrancy. Her work has a stylistic clarity and directness reminiscent of the work of late 19th Century book illustrators such as British painter and printmaker William Nicholson.
