BOROUGH GALLERIES

We, the Borough Galleries, have not existed since 2007. 30 years of operation. We were established in 1977. We didn`t function as most Commercial galleries do. We mainly purchased our works either from Auction, the Artist or privately. Mainly dealt in graphics. Dealt a lot with Port Jackson Press when owned by David Rankin who was a joy to deal with. We dealt in only Nationally recognised artists as we felt that it was time that there was a Regional Commercial gallery that could provide Regional and Rural folk the chance to see non amateur art. We also ensured that we had artists present to give a demonstration of how the graphics were done. e.g. If we had an Etching Exhibition we had an etcher there. Same applied to Lithographs, Screenprinting, Linocuts, etc, etc. We did over the years have major works by Olsen, Blackman, Rees, Rankin, etc. We had an Exhibition of the total Graphic works of Lloyd Rees. Graphics by Olsen, Blackman, Nolan, Arthur Boyd, Clifton Pugh, Mary MacQueen, Lesbia Thorpe, Lionel Lindsay, Jessie Traill and other Etchers from the earlier part of the 1900`s. In August 1992 we had a Women`s show called `Ladies in waiting.` Had the works of 96 women exhibited including Evelyn Syme, Doris Gough (married to Merric Boyd), Lucy Beck Boyd and Hermia Boyd, Ethel Spowers, Mary MacQueen, Jacqueline Hick, etc, etc. Because of our Graphics bent we had major National Galleries purchasing from us over the years. Occasionally we had one off artists who wanted to show in our gallery and then the normal commercial arrangements were made. We had a combined Exhibition of Artists - Arts lecturers from the local University as also another group exhibition of local ceramic artists. Excellent standard. We thoroughly enjoyed doing what we did though would have to admit to running the Gallery basically as a love job. Our living was made from our Antique Business - we imported from England, France, Vietnam, Indonesia and Argentina over the years. Packed all our own containers and occasionally picked up a nice piece of Art. We were also Valuers for the Governments Cultural bequests program. Our last Exhibition was of Watercolours from the 30`s to the 50`s in 2007. Our shows were diverse, interesting and educational and always had some-one of note open the shows.
